The paper industry constantly seeks to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and improve product quality. Automation plays a crucial role in achieving these objectives. This article examines a comprehensive automation project in a paper mill using Siemens TIA Portal software and numerous Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
Precise control of motor speed and torque is paramount in the paper production process. Speed fluctuations can lead to paper tears, thickness variations, and reduced final product quality. Using VFDs enables precise and continuous motor speed control, adjusting to changing process conditions.
In this project, an integrated control system for the entire paper production line was designed and implemented using TIA Portal software. This system encompasses control of various sections, including raw material feeding, pulping, drying, and packaging. Numerous VFDs (let’s assume 30 in this example) are connected to S7-1500 PLCs, responsible for precise control of different motors.
TIA Portal provides an integrated environment for programming PLCs, HMIs, drives, and network systems. This integration reduces engineering time, accelerates development, and simplifies troubleshooting. Other benefits of using TIA Portal include:
During this project, special emphasis was placed on training and knowledge transfer to the mill’s technical teams. Specialized training courses were conducted on TIA Portal programming, VFD configuration, and system troubleshooting. This enhanced the capabilities of internal teams and ensured system sustainability after project completion.
